Site and Context
On a newly formed SB9 lot in Burlingame, CA, this home embraces sweeping Bay views and the morning light. Commissioned by a grandmother as a legacy gift to her daughter and granddaughter, the design is shaped by curves, soft lines, and a quiet strength inspired by the women it was built for.
Concept and Vision
The design draws inspiration from the strength, softness, and deep familial connection shared between three generations of women. From the earliest sketches, the architecture embraced curves and gentle lines, a quiet, feminine language that speaks of legacy and grace.
Architectural Solutions
The Story Behind the Design:Commissioned by a grandmother as a gift for her daughter and granddaughter, the home is a vessel for family memories and daily rituals that connect generations. The goal: honor the strength, grace, and wisdom of the women who live here.
Design Philosophy: The curves are intentional, responding to the site and human need for protective, inviting spaces. East-facing windows frame morning light over the Bay, while soft walls create quiet alcoves for reading, reflection, and conversation.
A pale, warm facade complements the landscape. The entry path mirrors the home’s gentle geometry, creating anticipation while preserving privacy. A Japanese red maple anchors the site, and native drought-tolerant plantings offer low-maintenance, year-round interest.
Inside, curved architecture guides movement like a gentle current, replacing harsh transitions with a flowing, open layout. Living areas blend seamlessly while maintaining distinct spaces for different activities and moods.
Custom millwork follows the home’s soft geometry, with built-in seating, storage, and a kitchen island that echoes the curves throughout. Natural woods, soft textiles, and quartzite surfaces add warmth and tactility, aging gracefully to deepen the home’s sense of rootedness.
Curves also serve function: aerodynamic forms reduce wind resistance, and windows maximize light while minimizing heat. Radiant floor heating, water-wise landscaping, high-performance insulation, and energy-efficient systems ensure comfort with minimal environmental impact.
